Jena Malone offered role of Johanna Mason in Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire?

Now, it has yet to be confirmed by Lionsgate, but many major sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, are saying the role of Johanna Mason has been offered to Jena Malone and thus is the start of negotiations before she herself confirms it, I would think.  Hopefully the negotiations part won’t take long, but honestly, is there a reason for her not to accept the role, aside from being contracted to do something else?  Absolutely not.

I think Jena wants this role badly, and I believe she can play the role well.  If you’ve only seen Jena in the sweet roles she tends to play, then you may want to watch her in the movie Sucker Punch (although I personally was disappointed in the flick overall), because that’s where you can see her playing a tough, gun-toting, butt-kicking, hard-talking, knife wielding beauty named Rocket. Or you can watch the video below:

Aside from Sucker Punch, Jena has a list of really great flicks under her belt, including Donnie Darko, Cold MountainPride & Prejudice, and Into the Wild to name a few.  She also played Nancy McCoy in the excellent History Channel mini-series drama Hatfields and McCoys.

So, if you wonder if she can actually play the part of ax-chopping, snarky Johanna Mason, yes, I believe she can.  And also, just in case you were wondering, she has had her hair cropped pretty close to the scalp at one point.  I have no doubt she wouldn’t mind doing it again.

What are your thoughts?  Is she your Johanna Mason?

  1. FINALLY….. SOMEONE WHO THINKS SUCKER PUNCH WASN’T THAT GOOD OF A MOVIE!!!!! :D

She (kinda) looks the part and I’m sure she’d be good with weapons and all that but i have to agree with Kristina….she just doesn’t seem bitchy enough. I always imagined Johanna to be more badass and a bit weird too.
